The Kano State Government has teamed up with Global Sight Nigeria to offer a one-day training program aimed at improving the leadership and business development skills of artisans and technicians in the state. The initiative is focused on empowering leaders of artisan and technician associations to elevate their businesses and correct misconceptions about leadership.
The training, which involved participants from 164 associations across Kano, was designed to provide participants with essential leadership skills and knowledge to help them grow their businesses. According to a statement released, the session focused on building stronger leadership qualities that challenge outdated perceptions about leadership within artisan groups.
Empowering Local Artisans with Leadership Skills
The Commissioner for Investment, Commerce, Industry, and Cooperatives, Wada Sagagi, represented by the Director-General of the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency, Nasir Mansur, emphasized the importance of the training. He stated that it would empower the participants to “collaborate, share insights, and return to their businesses with renewed energy and hope.”
Sagagi noted that the training program was specifically aimed at refocusing the leadership mindset of local artisan leaders, aligning them with modern leadership practices that benefit both businesses and the community.
Government and Industry Support for Artisans
The training event was supported by various federal agencies, including the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria, the Nigeria Export Promotion Council, the Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission, the Corporate Affairs Commission, the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, and the Standards Organisation of Nigeria.
Global Sight Nigeria’s Role in Economic Development
Dayo Bello, CEO of Global Sight Nigeria, emphasized the significance of the collaboration between private companies, the government, and other stakeholders. He described the training as part of a broader effort to address Nigeria’s economic challenges through the development of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).
Bello pointed out that artisans and technicians are essential to Nigeria’s economic growth, stressing the need to invest in their skill development. He added, “If we sit down and fold our arms, it will affect all of us. We are just trying to upscale their skills and bring them to standard.”
He also emphasized the importance of leadership at the grassroots level, noting that effective communication between the government and citizens hinges on strong local leadership.
Upcoming Nigerian Artisans and Technicians Conference
In addition to the training, Bello announced that the event served as a prelude to the upcoming Nigerian Artisans and Technicians Conference, which will take place in Kano from May 26 to 28, 2025, at the Kano State Trade Fair Centre. The conference is expected to bring together artisans, technicians, and key stakeholders to further discuss industry challenges, solutions, and opportunities for growth.
