At the 4th CEO Summit 2025, themed “Positioning for Sustainability in Unpredictable Times,” held recently in Lagos, Dr. Victor Afolabi, a renowned entrepreneur and IT expert, stressed that integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) and automation is crucial for boosting efficiency, quality, and economic growth in both government and business sectors. According to Afolabi, adopting these technologies is not merely an option—it is a necessity for staying competitive in today’s increasingly digital world.
As Founder and CEO of GDM Group, Afolabi explained that many Nigerian businesses and government agencies are still struggling with inefficiencies and outdated practices that drive up operational costs and hinder growth. AI and automation, he emphasized, are key to digital transformation—enabling organizations to deliver superior results with fewer resources.
Efficiency and Strategic Leadership
Afolabi underlined the importance of business leaders embracing strategic foresight to drive efficiency across their operations. He stated that sustainable leadership is essential for fostering infrastructural development and fueling economic growth, particularly in uncertain times.
“Leaders must leverage AI and automation to streamline operations and ensure that they are creating lasting value,” Afolabi advocated.
Preparing for Global Economic Shifts
Turning to the global economic landscape, Afolabi acknowledged the impact of trade wars and the likelihood of a global recession in 2025. He cautioned that while Nigeria may not be a major global player, it is vulnerable to the economic repercussions of global shifts, urging businesses and citizens to brace for extended hardships.
“The rainy days ahead will be longer than expected. Nigeria must prepare for tough, drawn-out challenges,” Afolabi warned.
The Role of CEOs in Transformation
During the summit, Mr. Rume Daniel, Executive Director of Centre for Values in Leadership (CVL), emphasized the transformative power of CEOs. He pointed out that CEOs have a profound impact on both societal and economic transformation. Daniel reiterated that adaptive leadership, coupled with a commitment to technological adoption and long-term planning, is crucial as Nigeria navigates these tough times.
He also highlighted the importance of entrepreneurship in reducing unemployment, noting that every successful entrepreneur plays a key role in pulling people off the streets and into the workforce.
Leadership Beyond Profits
Daniel concluded by reflecting on the broader societal impact of leadership: “CEOs are not just focused on profits; they are a force for good and a catalyst for change. As we grow our organizations, we ultimately grow society.”
He added, “Leadership is the foundation of success—better leaders create better organizations, which in turn creates a stronger nation.”
