Telecommunications provider 9mobile has dismissed rumors suggesting that it has shut down operations in Nigeria, calling such claims false and misleading.
The speculation follows growing complaints from subscribers about deteriorating service quality and difficulties in porting to other networks.
9mobile Denies Porting Restrictions
In an official statement on Friday, 9mobile acknowledged the challenges faced by subscribers, particularly regarding Mobile Number Portability (MNP)—a service that allows customers to switch networks while retaining their phone numbers.
However, the company denied implementing any porting restrictions, emphasizing its commitment to fair and transparent services:
“We categorically refute the false rumors about an alleged shutdown. These claims are baseless and intended to cause unnecessary panic. While some customers have faced porting difficulties, we want to clarify that 9mobile has never restricted porting to other networks.”
Technical Challenges to Blame
9mobile attributed ongoing service disruptions to temporary technical challenges, assuring customers that most issues have been resolved.
“Some minor delays may still occur due to ongoing system optimizations, but we are actively working to ensure a smoother experience for all users,” the company stated.
Despite the challenges, 9mobile reaffirmed its resilience as a proudly Nigerian brand and highlighted its commitment to network modernization and service improvements.
Service Disruptions & Customer Exodus
Over the past few years, 9mobile has struggled with network upgrades, leading to mass customer migration to other networks.
-
At its peak in 2016, 9mobile had over 22 million subscribers.
-
By January 2025, data from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) revealed that the telco’s active subscriber base had dwindled to just 3.2 million.
The company has faced significant investment hurdles, delaying much-needed network expansion and service quality improvements.
New Ownership & Fresh Investments
In July 2024, 9mobile was acquired by LH Telecommunication Limited, a move aimed at repositioning and revitalizing the struggling telecom provider.
-
AFREXIM Bank approved fresh capital injection to facilitate the acquisition.
-
The deal resulted in a 95.5% ownership stake for the new investor.
-
A new Board of Directors was appointed to oversee operations.
Despite these changes, subscribers are yet to see tangible improvements in service quality, fueling frustration and speculation.
Looking Ahead: 9mobile’s Promise to Subscribers
9mobile assured customers that its ongoing investments in network upgrades will soon yield significant improvements, ensuring reliable connectivity for individuals, businesses, and communities.
“We sincerely appreciate our subscribers’ patience during this transition. While challenges exist, we are making significant progress and remain dedicated to providing exceptional service.”
With fresh capital, a new management team, and a renewed focus on modernization, subscribers are hopeful that 9mobile can reclaim its place in Nigeria’s competitive telecom industry.
Will 9mobile bounce back, or is it too late? Only time will tell.
