LAGOS — Nigeria has officially secured the hosting rights for the fifth Intra-African Trade Fair (IATF2027), marking a strategic homecoming for the continent’s largest trade and investment marketplace. On Monday, March 9, 2026, the Federal Government signed the landmark host country agreement at the Wole Soyinka Centre for Culture and Creative Arts in Lagos, formally taking the baton from Algeria.
The 2027 fair is projected to be a record-breaker, targeting over $50 billion in trade and investment deals and attracting more than 100,000 visitors from across the globe.
A Historic Homecoming: From 1980 to 2027
Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, Chairperson of the IATF2027 Advisory Council, highlighted the deep historical resonance of the event. He noted that Lagos was the birthplace of the 1980 Lagos Plan of Action, the first major continental blueprint for industrialization and self-sufficiency.
“Bringing IATF2027 to Lagos is historically significant,” Obasanjo remarked. “This is where African leaders first championed the vision of a unified, self-reliant marketplace. Now, we are operationalizing that vision through the AfCFTA.”
The “Global Africa” Blueprint
Scheduled to run from November 5 to 11, 2027, the fair will operate under the theme: “Global Africa, Smart Trade—From Market Access to Market Power.” Beyond standard trade exhibitions, the 2027 edition will feature a robust ecosystem of specialized events:
-
CANEX (Creative Africa Nexus): A massive platform for music, film, fashion, and digital content, highlighting the creative economy as a pillar of intra-African trade.
-
Africa Automotive Show: Focused on building regional automotive value chains.
-
AU Youth Start-up Pavilion: Providing a global stage for the continent’s most innovative tech founders.
-
Global Africa Day: A dedicated forum to bridge the gap between continental businesses and the African Diaspora.
By the Numbers: Scaling African Prosperity
The IATF has evolved from a “bold experiment” into an essential economic engine. Since its inception in Cairo in 2018, the fair has become the primary venue for closing cross-border contracts.
| Metric | IATF History (2018–2025) | IATF 2027 Targets |

Strategic Impact: Operationalizing the AfCFTA
Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr. Jumoke Oduwole, emphasized that Nigeria—the first country to complete its five-year AfCFTA implementation review—is uniquely positioned to host this event. She noted that the fair is “existential for our survival and prosperity,” providing the practical platform needed to move from policy signatures to concrete commerce.
Afreximbank President Dr. George Elombi added that Nigeria’s “entrepreneurial depth and industrial capacity” make it the natural choice to drive the next phase of the pan-African single market.
