As part of activities lined up for Lagos State University’s (LASU) 28th convocation ceremony, the Minister of Education, Maruf Olatunji Alausa, is set to deliver a keynote lecture on the theme “Patriots, Citizenship and National Ownership: The Imperative of Collective Responsibility for Nigeria’s Future.”
The lecture will take place on Tuesday, April 8, 2025, at the Buba Marwa Auditorium, LASU Main Campus, Ojo, and is expected to stir national dialogue on how citizens can play a more active role in shaping Nigeria’s future.
A Vision of Collective Patriotism
Alausa is expected to explore themes around national identity, patriotism, civic responsibility, and how shared ownership of Nigeria’s destiny is key to unlocking sustainable development. The event comes at a time when there is a renewed national interest in redefining the role of citizens in building a more unified and prosperous Nigeria.
Vice Chancellor Highlights LASU’s Academic Growth
Speaking at the pre-convocation press conference, Vice Chancellor Ibiyemi Ibilola Olatunji-Bello highlighted several significant milestones in LASU’s journey toward becoming Nigeria’s leading state university. She emphasized the institution’s:
- Commitment to uncompromising academic standards
- Expansion of global and local academic networks
- Launch of innovative platforms like TALKSPACE, LASU’s proprietary online meeting platform
- Creation of the Faculty of Computing, comprising departments in Computer Science, Cyber Security, Data Science, ICT, and Software Engineering
These additions, she said, are designed to equip LASU students with future-ready digital skills.
Cutting-Edge Infrastructure and Innovation
Olatunji-Bello also unveiled the university’s latest investments in technological infrastructure:
- A 1-petabyte Tier 3 Data Centre, to serve as a digital repository and support data services across Lagos State and beyond
- A new 350-seat Computer-Based Test Centre, enhancing digital examinations and administrative efficiency
These advancements underscore LASU’s positioning as a forward-thinking institution ready to take on global academic and technological challenges.
Convocation Highlights
The 28th convocation ceremony, scheduled to span April 4–10, will be a celebration of academic achievement and institutional excellence. Key events include:
- Honorary doctorate degrees for Buba Marwa, Chairman of the NDLEA and former Lagos State Military Governor, and Olufemi Olusegun Pedro, former Deputy Governor of Lagos State
- Distinguished professorship recognition for Joseph Abayomi Olagunju
Graduating Class Statistics
A total of 11,917 students will receive various degrees, diplomas, and certificates. From the First Degree category, 8,711 students are graduating, including:
- 192 First Class honours
- 3,076 Second Class Upper
- 4,397 Second Class Lower
- 990 Third Class
- 39 Pass
- 17 Unclassified degrees (MBBS/BDS)
The best graduating student, Nwosu Isioma Sybil from the Department of Biochemistry, recorded an impressive CGPA of 4.93.
