A jointly funded initiative by the United Kingdom and the European Union has opened applications for a digital and AI-focused energy innovation challenge aimed at improving electricity access and efficiency across Africa, with strong participation expected from Nigeria.

The programme is designed to support solutions that strengthen energy access, accelerate the energy transition, and improve electricity utility performance across the continent.

 Focus on Nigeria’s Energy Gap

The initiative comes at a time when Nigeria continues to face major electricity challenges, with an estimated 90 million people lacking reliable power supply.

Organisers say the programme will help innovators test solutions in real-world conditions, scale viable technologies, and develop models that can be replicated across other African markets.

 Two Funding Tracks for Innovators

The challenge is structured into two main categories:

  • Tech Accelerator Category: Open to innovators across 51 African countries, focusing on digital and AI-driven energy solutions
  • Partnership Category: Targeted specifically at Nigeria, in collaboration with the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company, focusing on joint pilot projects
