The European Union (EU) has announced a €10.4 million investment in the Nigeria Solar for Health Project (NISHP), a key initiative aimed at powering Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and primary healthcare centres with clean and reliable solar energy.
The announcement was made during the Project Developers Roundtable Workshop for NISHP held in Abuja. According to Inga Stephanowicz, Head of Section for Green and Digital Economy at the EU, the funding represents a significant milestone in the project’s implementation across Nigeria.
“NISHP will provide 24-hour access to clean, efficient, and dependable energy to MSMEs and public healthcare facilities throughout the country,” she said.
Stephanowicz emphasized that the project is a collaborative effort involving the Nigerian government, private sector stakeholders, and local communities. The initiative aligns with Nigeria’s broader development agenda and is designed to promote sustainable energy access while supporting economic and social development.
By working in partnership with state governments and leveraging available counterpart funding, the program aims to electrify not only health centres, but also small businesses, telecom infrastructure, and other underserved sectors.
Nasiru Bello, Team Lead for NISHP, highlighted the broader benefits of the initiative, noting that the widespread adoption of solar energy can lead to better healthcare delivery, expanded access to electricity, and overall economic progress for Nigeria.
