Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has described Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) as the primary engine for global economic resilience, job creation, and poverty reduction. Speaking at the Nigeria Business Summit Regional Tour and MSME Day commemoration in Aba—organized in partnership with Stanbic IBTC Bank—the governor announced that the state is drafting its first comprehensive MSME Policy. The policy will establish a binding institutional and legal framework to guide small business formation, digital transformation, and access to capital.

The industrial intervention combines administrative reforms with logistics upgrades:

  • Eliminating the Data Deficit in Local Commerce: Represented by the Commissioner for Industry and SMEs, Dr. Michael Akpara, Governor Otti noted that the lack of credible, verified business metrics has historically blocked small businesses from accessing formal credit lines. To resolve this, the state is developing the second comprehensive MSME Directory. This data asset is designed to map local industries, track sector performance, and give Tier-1 commercial banks like Stanbic IBTC a verified pool of businesses to evaluate for lending.

  • Upgrading Logistics Networks for Heavy Industry: Alongside the administrative policy updates, the state government commissioned the newly reconstructed Industry/Onyeador Road network within Aba’s commercial hub. The infrastructure project clears a notorious logistics bottleneck that had slowed down raw material delivery and finished goods distribution for the factories in the Aba industrial zone.

  • Strengthening Public-Private Operational Partnerships: Thibaut Boidin, Managing Director of Nigerian Breweries Plc, commended the state government for rebuilding the main access route serving the company’s historic Aba brewery axis. Corporate leadership noted that this strategic road restoration directly lowers vehicle maintenance overheads, improves supply chain efficiency, and serves as a practical model for how public infrastructure investments can drive corporate productivity and keep manufacturing jobs in the region.
